Southern Living magazine features “10 Great New Getaways” in Alabama
The December issue of Southern Living magazine features a special article on the best new attractions in the state. Travel in Alabama keeps getting better. Here are our picks for the best new attractions:
1. The Alabama Gulf State Park Pier, Gulf Shores. The new structure stretches more than a quarter-mile long – the longest fishing pier on the Gulf Coast. www.alapark.com/gulfstate
2. Hawk Pride Mountain Offroad, Tuscumbia. This 1,000 acre park has 30 miles of rock-climbing and off-road trails for 4x4’s, four-wheeled specialty ATV’s, and specialty rock-climbing vehicles. www.hawkpridemountainoffroad.com
3. Hank Aaron Stadium and Childhood Home, Mobile. The Port City’s baseball team has moved from the Baseball Hall of Famer’s childhood home to Hank Aaron Stadium where the AA Mobile BayBears play. www.hankaaronstadium.com
4. Opelika Sportsplex and Aquatic Center, Opelika. This 75,000-square-foot complex is one of the largest in the South, offering basketball courts, racquetball courts, heated pool, walking track, weight, cardio, and aerobics rooms. 6. Wellborn Muscle Car Museum, Alexander City. 7. Wolf Bay Lodge, Orange Beach. After a fire destroyed the Wolf Bay Lodge last year, fans of its gumbo and seafood platters thought they’d seen the end of the popular 1973 restaurant. But sisters Charlene Haber and Alice Bretz, the founder’s daughters, moved the seafood place to a new location at Zeke’s Landing in Orange Beach. www.wolf-bay-lodge.com
8. Lakepoint Resort State Park, Eufaula. After completing a $14 million renovation, this favorite spot overlooking Lake Eufaula has added amenities such as slate floors in the lobby, and expanded dining room at the water’s edge, and six executive suites. www.alapark.com/lakepointresort
