Thanks to the sandy,
relatively shallow
shoreline waters
of the Gulf Of Mexico,
beachcombers
digging on
Pleasure Island
regularly turn up
treasures, such as
seashells, sand dollars
or even prized starfish.
Like mollusks that live
in shells, the sand dollar
and beautiful starfish
are not actually fish.
Rather, they are fragile,
spiny-skinned, marine
animals known as
echinoids. These prizes
are skeletal remains that
are best found as the
tide recedes, especially
after heavy storms with
lot's of wave action.
