As a vivid sunset highlights storm clouds to the east, a group plays a friendly game of soccer on the expansive beach
in front of the Tidewater condominium building in Orange Beach.

Pleasure Island offers plenty of ways to have fun on the beach. But Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and surrounding areas like Pensacola, Florida and Mobile also offer attractions that are unique, including theme parks, museums, galleries, historical sites, and parks.

You can drive to Fort Morgan on the western tip of Paradise Island, see a military outpost that once guarded Mobile Bay and inspect the Civil War-era cannon and World War I gun mounts. Then take the car onto a ferry for an afternoon cruise to Dauphin Island and its Audubon bird sanctuary. This patch of land in Mobile Bay was once labeled Massacre Island after a French explorer found a large number of skeletons there in 1699. Back on the island, from spring through fall, the Minamac Wildflower Bog & Country Gardens showcases native Southern wildflowers. Or you can just have fun sliding at Waterville USA, or putt-putt your way around Pirate's Island.

In Mobile, a rare World War II-era battleship, the U.S.S. Alabama, and a submarine, the U.S.S. Drum, are floating museums filled with history. And in Pensacola, the sprawling National Museum of Naval Aviation displays over 140 restored warplanes once used by the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.
